UTTARKASHI: After a challenging three-week disruption caused by the August 5 flash floods, road connectivity has been fully restored between Uttarkashi and Harsil. This crucial lifeline has reconnected several villages to the district headquarters, bringing a sense of relief to the disaster-affected region.
The severe flash floods in Dharali and Harsil, triggered by excessive rainfall, had led to the formation of a temporary lake that submerged a helipad and severely damaged key sections of the road. Thanks to the relentless efforts of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the damaged stretches in Limchygad, Dabrani, and Songad have been repaired, and essential services like electricity, water, and communication have also been reinstated in the area.
However, despite this significant progress, the Gangotri pilgrimage remains suspended. Parts of the Gangotri national highway beyond Harsil are still submerged or badly damaged, making it unsafe for pilgrims. District Magistrate Prashant Arya has instructed the BRO to work on a “war footing” to expedite the repairs so that the yatra can resume as soon as possible.
The district administration continues to be on high alert, with all relevant government agencies, including the PWD, Irrigation, Revenue, Health, Supply, SDRF, and NDRF, actively involved in restoring normalcy. Officials have confirmed that essential supplies and food grains are being distributed in sufficient quantities to the affected communities and will continue until their lives return to normal.
