RJD MLC Sunil Singh Booked For ‘Provocative’ Remark Warning Of ‘Nepal-Like Situation’ Over Bihar Vote Count

Patna: A case has been registered against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) lawmaker Sunil Singh for allegedly making a provocative statement threatening “Nepal-like” unrest if irregularities occur during vote counting in Bihar, police officials confirmed on Thursday.

The FIR was filed at the instance of on-duty police officer Khusbu Kumari, ahead of the vote counting scheduled for Friday across 46 centres in 38 districts.

Charges Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Election Laws

According to Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar, the FIR names Sunil Singh under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023

  • Section 174: Undue influence at election
  • Section 353: Mischievous statement
  • Section 352: Intentional insult

Additionally, the FIR includes provisions from the Representation of the People Act and the Information Technology Act, reflecting the alleged use of digital media to circulate the remarks.

Controversial Remarks Trigger Action

The controversy erupted after Sunil Singh allegedly warned election officials to ensure transparency in vote counting, cautioning that any manipulation of results could lead to “scenes similar to those witnessed in Nepal and Bangladesh” being replicated in Bihar.

He claimed that several RJD candidates lost in 2020 due to irregularities and urged officials to act fairly this time.

“I appeal to officials to act honestly — conduct counting fairly, separate truth from falsehood, and perform your duties with integrity. Do not become instruments in someone else’s hands,” Singh said, adding that any wrongdoing “would spiral out of control.”

Political Reactions

RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha defended Singh, claiming that his statement was “misinterpreted and taken out of context.” He accused the BJP of “using diversionary tactics to avoid discussion on governance and development issues.”

On the other hand, JD(U) national working president Sanjay Jha condemned the remark, calling it “an attempt to incite public unrest” and demanded immediate intervention by the Election Commission of India.

Counting Amid Tight Security

The FIR comes just a day before counting for the Bihar Assembly elections, which is set to take place under tight security arrangements. Officials confirmed that elaborate measures are in place to ensure transparency and prevent any law-and-order disturbance during the process.
