Retired Manipur Police Officer Killed By Son, Who Dies By Suicide In Imphal West

A devastating tragedy struck a family in Imphal West on Friday when a retired Manipur Police Service (MPS) officer was allegedly shot dead by his 25-year-old son, who subsequently died by suicide at their residence.

The deceased retired officer has been identified as Akoijam Shantikumar, and his son as Akoijam Kishan.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred around 1:30 pm on Friday inside their residence in the Singjamei area of Imphal West.

  • The Shooting: According to police, the son, Akoijam Kishan, allegedly shot his father, Akoijam Shantikumar, who sustained a bullet wound to his chest.
  • Medical Attention: The retired MPS officer was immediately rushed to Raj Medicity, North Administrative Officer’s Colony (AOC) hospital, but tragically died while receiving treatment.
  • The Suicide: Following the shooting, the son reportedly fled inside his room in the same building. A police officer confirmed that Kishan was later found dead, having died by suicide with a gunshot injury to the head, using the same pistol used to shoot his father.

A team from the Singjamei police station promptly arrived at the scene, secured the area, and initiated an inquiry. A case has been registered at the police station. Both bodies were sent to the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) hospital morgue in Imphal for post-mortem.

Motive Still Unclear

While the sequence of events has been established through initial findings, the motive behind the fatal incident remains unknown. A police officer stated that an investigation is currently underway to ascertain the exact circumstances and the reason that led the son to shoot his father before taking his own life. Family members declined to comment on the tragic incident.
