Renuka Chowdhury Moves Motion In Rajya Sabha Over Pahalgam Attack, Operation Sindoor, And Trump Mediation Claims

New Delhi [India], July 21: Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury has submitted a Notice of Motion in the Rajya Sabha seeking an urgent discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and controversial claims by former US President Donald Trump regarding his role in mediating peace between India and Pakistan.

The motion calls for the House to adjourn its listed business to deliberate on what Chowdhury described as “grave lapses in internal security” that led to the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.

“Violation of Shimla Agreement?”

Chowdhury’s notice further references Trump’s repeated public statements — “24 times so far”, most recently on July 19 — where he claimed he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using trade leverage. If these claims are accurate, Chowdhury warns they would violate the 1972 Shimla Agreement, which explicitly prohibits third-party mediation in Indo-Pak matters.

“The people of India deserve to know whether the Shimla agreement remains in place or not,” Chowdhury emphasized in her motion.

Demand for Accountability

The Congress MP has demanded that the government explain its stance on Trump’s statements and clarify the foreign policy decisions it has taken in relation to Operation Sindoor — India’s precision strike on terror camps following the Pahalgam attack.

“The House must be informed of the extent of the intelligence and security failure in Pahalgam, and the government must clarify its position on Mr. Trump’s claims,” the notice reads.

Monsoon Session Set for Stormy Start

The Monsoon Session of Parliament, which begins today (July 21) and runs until August 21, is expected to be contentious, with the INDIA alliance gearing up to corner the government on several fronts:

  • Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor
  • Trump’s mediation claims
  • Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive
  • The Air India AI-171 crash
  • Security of SC, ST, and minorities

This is the first parliamentary session post-Operation Sindoor, and the opposition had earlier demanded a special session in light of the escalation.

The session includes 21 sittings over 32 days, with a break from August 12 to 18. The government has listed multiple key bills, but it now faces intense scrutiny and pushback from the united opposition bloc.
