Renowned Bastar Woodcraft Artist Pandi Ram Mandavi Conferred Padma Shri By President Murmu

New Delhi [India], May 28: Pandi Ram Mandavi, a master woodcraft artist from Bastar, Chhattisgarh, was conferred the Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday for his exceptional contributions to Indian traditional art.

Mandavi has spent decades honing his craft, specializing in the creation of wooden idols and memory pillars that reflect the rich tribal heritage of Bastar. His intricate, culturally resonant artworks have not only captivated audiences in India but have also gained international acclaim.

“I am very happy to receive this. I never thought this would happen,” said an emotional Mandavi. “I want to thank the Government of India. I make idols of wood and memory pillars, and have showcased my work across cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, Kerala, Delhi, and Bhopal — even in countries like Italy, Germany, Russia, and Poland.”

Mandavi’s artistry is deeply rooted in the traditions of tribal Chhattisgarh, where woodcraft is not just a livelihood but a way of storytelling and preserving memory. His works are celebrated for their intricate detailing, symbolism, and cultural authenticity — often serving as visual chronicles of Bastar’s tribal identity and legacy.

The Padma Shri is India’s fourth-highest civilian award, after the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Bhushan. It recognises individuals for distinguished service in various fields, including arts, literature, public affairs, science, and social work.

Mandavi’s recognition marks a proud moment for the tribal communities of India, as traditional artisans continue to gain the national and international platforms they deserve.
