Guwahati (Assam) [India], March 29: As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, redevelopment work is underway at 60 railway stations across the North East, with 50 stations in Assam selected for transformation. The scheme aims to modernize and upgrade railway stations, providing state-of-the-art amenities to improve the overall passenger experience.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, shared details about the ongoing redevelopment, stating, “In the North East, 60 stations are being redeveloped as part of this project, with 50 stations in Assam. Some of the stations, including Haiborgaon, Narengi, Jagiroad, and Chaparmukh, are in advanced stages of redevelopment and will be commissioned gradually.”
New facilities are being incorporated, such as lifts and escalators, improved approach roads, dedicated entry and exit points, parking facilities, and amenities for differently-abled passengers. These developments are aimed at creating modern, accessible, and user-friendly stations.
Recently, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway, conducted a comprehensive inspection of four major stations—Narengi, Jagiroad, Chaparmukh, and Haiborgaon—to review the progress of the redevelopment work. The total investment for upgrading these four stations amounts to Rs 108.94 crore, with individual investments allocated as follows: Rs 30.95 crore for Narengi, Rs 31.18 crore for Jagiroad, Rs 31.87 crore for Chaparmukh, and Rs 14.94 crore for Haiborgaon.
Under this initiative, 92 stations in total within the Northeast Frontier Railway’s jurisdiction are being upgraded. The goal is to improve passenger amenities, station aesthetics, and introduce modern facilities such as better waiting halls, lighting, signage, clean toilets, and improved circulation areas. These upgrades will help position Indian Railways as a world-class transportation service.
Additionally, the Railway Ministry has announced plans to develop Guwahati Railway Station into an IT hub and a world-class station. The multistory building will house IT sector facilities alongside modern passenger amenities. Kapinjal Kishore Sharma expressed hope for the completion of the design phase and the commencement of construction soon.
