A Reddit member who just got back to India has started a conversation by talking about his experiences with the H-1B visa system and work culture in the US. The title of the post is “Returned from the USA recently.” The anonymous user said that the poisonous behavior of some Indian bosses was a big factor for moving back.
“They take advantage of workers on visas because they know how hard and dangerous it is because they went through it themselves,” he wrote.
The Redditor went on to say, “Honestly, I don’t think DJT’s reasoning is completely wrong.” There are a lot of Indians in prominent positions that mostly hire other Indians, just to treat them badly and take advantage of their visa status. They don’t hire Americans because they know they can’t make them work all the time, and Americans will sue if they cross the line.
Claims of Favoritism
The user says that community-based recruiting strategies go beyond Amazon. He gave examples of Telugu-speaking managers at Walmart who preferred Telugu candidates and Gujarati managers at Intel who preferred Gujarati personnel. He said, “My college friends used to play cricket with Intel workers to get internships.”
He went on to say, “Of course Americans will be angry if they see this kind of favoritism. They’re not stupid.”
The Reddit user also linked these actions to the larger discussion around H-1B visas and the Trump administration’s plans to raise fees. “The new H1B rule will definitely cut down on the number of these kinds of workers and managers.” “I’m glad that everyone saw how weak the H1B situation is this weekend and that it’s not as great as it looks from the outside,” he wrote.
Not Everything Is Bad
The user stressed that working in the US was still a valuable experience, even though it was hard. “Not saying don’t go; living in a first-world country is definitely a good experience.” And I’m not saying that everyone is like this. I’ve had some great chances to interview, and I do regret messing up a few of them. Life happens. It wasn’t just these problems that made me decide to move back; it was also a personal choice.
He said, “I just felt like I couldn’t be on two boats at once, especially since they were 24 hours apart by plane and had visa problems.”
Reactions on Social Media
The post got a lot of passionate reactions online, and a lot of people agreed.
A user said, “You know what’s the worst?” People who manipulated the system to gain the GC and citizenship will never be penalized. Instead, it will always be the hard workers who don’t hail from particular Indian states.
Someone another said, “The favoritism based on caste, region, or language is definitely a problem.” A relative of mine who is older works as a manager at a computer company. She was talking about interviews and said she had interviewed two applicants for a job: an American and an Indian. She said she recruited the Indian because he was “our caste.” I felt like throwing up.
A third user said, “The H1B was made with good intentions decades ago, but now it is being widely abused by Indian software companies like TCS, Infosys, and others.” It was about time, and I’m delighted they did what was best for them, as they should have.
