NEW DELHI — In a landmark shift for the security of India’s most iconic monument, the Red Fort Complex is finally being equipped with a comprehensive CCTV surveillance network. The project, which was stalled for nearly seven years due to preservation concerns by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), was fast-tracked following a deadly suicide attack near the site on November 10, 2025.
1. The Security Overhaul
The decision to install 150 CCTV cameras was finalized following high-level deliberations between the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Delhi Police, CISF, and the Home Ministry.
- First Phase: 150 cameras will be strategically placed throughout the complex. Historically, the ASI resisted such installations to avoid “damaging the aesthetic and structural integrity” of the protected site.
- Eliminating Blind Spots: High-mast floodlights will also be installed in August 15 Park and Madhav Das Park to illuminate the fort’s ramparts, ensuring no vulnerable areas remain under the cover of darkness.
- Collaboration: The ASI will now assist security forces in ensuring that the mounting of hardware does not deface the 17th-century red sandstone walls.
2. The November 10 Suicide Attack
The urgency for these measures stems from the Pulwama-Faridabad terror module attack that shook the capital late last year.
- The Incident: At 6:52 PM on November 10, 2025, a car laden with explosives blew up at a traffic signal near the Red Fort Metro station.
- The Bomber: The attacker was identified as Dr. Umar un Nabi, an assistant professor from Faridabad. Investigative footage showed Nabi parked his explosive-laden vehicle near the Sunheri Mosque—adjacent to the Red Fort wall—for three hours before moving to the final blast site.
- Fatalities: The blast killed 15 people (including the bomber) and injured over 30 others.
- Obsession with the Fort: Intelligence suggests Nabi originally targeted the Fort itself but was deterred by the multi-layered security cordons at the main entrance, leading him to detonate in slow-moving traffic instead.
3. Operation Sindoor & Rising Threats
Security officials noted that terror groups, specifically Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), have intensified “chatter” regarding the Red Fort as a symbolic target.
- Operation Sindoor: This was India’s tri-service military response in May 2025 following the Pahalgam terror attack. Indian forces destroyed nine major terror launchpads across the border.
- Retaliation Plot: Agencies believe the November 10 attack and subsequent threats are retaliatory strikes by JeM to avenge the losses sustained during Operation Sindoor.
- White-Collar Terror: The involvement of educated professionals like Dr. Nabi has led agencies to re-evaluate surveillance protocols for “white-collar” modules operating in the National Capital Region (NCR).
