Red Fort Car Explosion: 9 Killed, Several Injured In Blast Near Lal Qila Metro Station

New Delhi: At least Nine people killed and 12 others injured after a car explosion occurred near Gate No. 1 of Lal Qila (Red Fort) Metro Station in Delhi on Monday evening, officials said.

The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a call regarding the blast around 7 pm. Soon after, seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames and assist in rescue efforts.

According to officials, the explosion triggered a massive fire, which spread to three to four nearby vehicles, causing further damage. The area has been cordoned off, and a team from the Delhi Police Special Cell has arrived to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the explosion, which remains unclear at this stage.

Casualties and Injuries

Authorities confirmed that 15 people were taken to Lok Nayak Hospital, where eight succumbed to their injuries, while three remain in critical condition and one is stable, news agency ANI reported.

The Delhi Fire Department said the explosion originated from a car parked near the Red Fort Metro gate. The impact was severe enough to cause multiple vehicles in the vicinity to catch fire.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses described the explosion as “deafening” and unlike anything they had experienced before.

“I fell three times due to the explosion. It felt as if we were all going to die,” said a local shopkeeper, recounting the terrifying moments.

Another eyewitness said, “When we came near, we saw body parts scattered on the road. No one could figure out what had happened. Several cars were damaged in seconds.”

Investigation Underway

Senior police officials, including personnel from the Special Cell and forensic teams, are currently investigating the scene. The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, and authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, including accidental or deliberate causes.

The Delhi Police has urged citizens to avoid the area as the investigation continues and the site remains sealed for forensic examination.

Background

The explosion site is located close to Delhi’s Red Fort, one of India’s most-visited heritage landmarks, and Lal Qila Metro Station, a busy hub connecting several parts of the capital. The incident has raised concerns about security in the high-footfall area, especially during evening hours.
