Mangan (Sikkim), May 31: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for parts of Sikkim, warning of severe rainfall, possible flooding, and landslides across Mangan, Gyalshing, and Soreng districts due to rising water levels in the Teesta River.
According to an early morning Nowcast Weather Alert issued from Baluwakhani, Gangtok, heavy rains are expected to continue for 2 to 3 hours from 6:15 am, intensifying risks in already vulnerable zones.
The District Magistrate of Gangtok urged residents to remain alert but not panic, assuring that the administration is monitoring the situation and will provide timely updates.
In a public notice, the DM emphasized that areas along the Teesta River belt from Dikchu to Singtam in Gangtok district, particularly in North Sikkim, are at higher risk. “All nodal officers for disaster management have been instructed to stay on high alert and maintain contact with their field functionaries,” the statement read.
Local officials have been directed to immediately report any emergencies to the District Control Room at 03592-204995. The DM also urged villagers near riverbanks and vulnerable slopes to be informed and stay vigilant.
Landslides in North Sikkim
The situation escalated further as landslides were reported in the Theeng and Chungthang areas, damaging multiple properties. Authorities have not reported any casualties so far, but the rising Teesta water level has prompted the deployment of emergency services and disaster response teams across at-risk areas.
Travel and Safety Advisory
The IMD and district administration have strongly advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors where possible, and refrain from going near rivers or unstable slopes.
Emergency response protocols are now in full swing as authorities brace for further weather deterioration. Residents are urged to follow official advisories and check local news sources for the latest information.
