Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: Kangana Ranaut’s ambitious directorial venture Emergency is all set to release on January 17, 2025, after enduring significant challenges, including a delayed release and scrutiny from various quarters. The film focuses on the 21-month Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from 1975 to 1977.
Initially slated for release on September 6, 2024, the movie faced delays due to a prolonged process of obtaining clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Additionally, Emergency encountered objections from certain Sikh organizations, who accused the makers of misrepresenting facts.
Challenges and Triumphs
Speaking with ANI, Kangana Ranaut shared her experiences during the tumultuous journey of bringing Emergency to the big screen.
“Bhaut sangharsh raha…kaafi cheezo ka saamana karna pada (There was a lot of struggle… we faced many challenges). It was not an easy ride. Our film was scrutinized on every single thing by various communities. After conquering all such obstacles, we have finally reached here. We have a lot of faith in our constitution, country, and the censor board, which allows us to present our film to the audience.”
Kangana also revealed that the delays and uncertainties surrounding the film’s release forced her to sell her property in Mumbai to secure funding.
“I had no idea that I would endure such difficult times while making this film. Usually, my films are made on a comfortable budget, but this time, I faced numerous struggles—whether related to studios or funds. The biggest struggle was the constant question: ‘Will the film ever get released?’ This doubt loomed over us for a long time.”
Emergency: A Bold Political Drama
Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, Emergency delves into one of India’s most controversial political periods, highlighting its impact on the nation and its citizens. Kangana not only directed the film but also plays the role of Indira Gandhi.
The film stars Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik, with each actor portraying significant historical figures.
Looking Ahead
Now back on the promotional trail, Kangana expressed her excitement about finally sharing the film with audiences.
“We are eagerly waiting to show the film to the world. It’s a story that needs to be told and witnessed by everyone.”
