Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has come to the defense of Dhurandhar: The Revenge and its director Aditya Dhar amid growing criticism labeling the film as ‘propaganda’. Known for his outspoken views, RGV praised the sequel’s scale, storytelling, and technical innovation, highlighting how it pushes the boundaries of conventional Indian cinema.
“Calling Dhurandhar just a ‘film’ doesn’t feel right,” Varma said in an interview with ANI. “In the last 20–30 years, no film has come like this. Its scale, its twists, and even the structure, especially the climax, are all packaged in a massive and complete way. Aditya Dhar has transformed the cinematic structure itself.”

The criticism centers on claims that the spy thriller glorifies the ruling party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Varma countered these allegations, arguing that the movie simply presents the director’s point of view. “As for propaganda, I don’t really understand that term in this context. Everyone has their own viewpoint. Aditya has shared his perspective through the film. If you disagree, you can always make your own film in response,” he said.
Produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, Dhurandhar: The Revenge features a multi-starrer cast including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Rakesh Bedi. Set in Lyari, Karachi, the film follows an Indian spy infiltrating gangs while dismantling local terror networks.
Since its release on March 19, the film has been a massive box office success, earning ₹850 crore worldwide in just five days, with critics and peers alike lauding its technical brilliance and engaging narrative.
