Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) has once again stirred controversy by defending his descriptive comments about female actors, insisting they should be viewed as praise for their unique assets rather than objectification.
In a recent interview with Zoom TV, the director addressed the long-standing criticism he has faced regarding his remarks on actresses like Sridevi and the speculation surrounding his professional relationship with Urmila Matondkar.
Objectification vs. Praise
RGV stood firm on his infamous “thunder thighs” remark about the late superstar Sridevi, arguing that such physical traits are “assets” that contribute to a star’s unique appeal, separate from their acting talent.
“I don’t think it is objectification. For instance, when I said ‘Thunder Thighs’ about Sridevi, I believe they are her assets apart from her talent. That is unique about her. Calling it objectification is objectifying my comment,” he asserted.
He further elaborated on this controversial stance by suggesting that physical attributes, similar to a star’s height, are an integral part of their overall appeal and stardom. RGV has previously stated his belief that Sridevi would not have achieved the same massive stardom had she possessed slimmer legs, claiming they were part of her “whole package.”
Addressing Urmila Matondkar Link-Up Rumours
The filmmaker also responded to the constant rumours and scrutiny regarding his extensive professional collaboration with Urmila Matondkar, which included iconic films like Rangeela, Daud, and Satya.
He dismissed the speculation, stating that it is merely how the “system” and social media operate.
“I think she is the most versatile actress, that is why I have worked with her in so many movies. I have worked with Amitabh Bachchan more, but nobody talks about it,” he remarked, pointing out the disproportionate focus on his collaboration with the actress.
RGV’s Upcoming Project
Looking ahead, Ram Gopal Varma is preparing for his next project, a horror drama titled Police Station Main Bhoot. The film, which is set entirely inside a police station, will mark his reunion with actor Manoj Bajpayee after a 27-year hiatus. RGV is reportedly exploring a tense, claustrophobic narrative style for the movie.
