New Delhi [India], December 27: The passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Thursday has sparked an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, celebrities, and citizens across the nation.
Actor Rajinikanth also shared his condolences, praising Dr. Singh as “a great financial reformer and statesman” who played a pivotal role in shaping India’s economic landscape. The 92-year-old leader passed away due to age-related medical conditions, leaving behind a legacy marked by his significant contributions to the country’s growth.
During his tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Singh oversaw crucial reforms, including economic liberalization and the introduction of landmark legislation such as the Right to Information Act (RTI) and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sorrow, calling Dr. Singh one of India’s “most distinguished leaders.” On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he became a respected economist and held various government positions, including Finance Minister, where he made a lasting impact on India’s economic policy. As Prime Minister, he made significant efforts to improve the lives of the people.”
PM Modi reflected on his personal interactions with Dr. Singh, recalling their discussions during the time when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, and Dr. Singh served as Prime Minister. He added, “His wisdom and humility were always visible. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with his family, friends, and countless admirers. Om Shanti.”
Dr. Singh’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics. Known for his calm demeanor and economic expertise, Dr. Singh served two terms as Prime Minister following Congress’ victory in the 2004 general elections, which defeated the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA. He was succeeded by Narendra Modi in 2014 after Congress’ defeat in the general elections.
Dr. Singh’s leadership during the aftermath of the 1991 economic crisis earned him recognition as one of India’s foremost economists. As Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, Dr. Singh was instrumental in the reforms that liberalized India’s economy, integrating it into the global market.
