New Delhi [India], June 2: BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla on Monday downplayed reports suggesting his imminent takeover as interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stating that such transitions are purely procedural.
The speculation comes as current BCCI President Roger Binny is set to turn 70 on July 19, reaching the age cap for office-bearers. Reports indicate Shukla, 65, could take charge temporarily for three months, ahead of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for September, when elections for a full-term president will be held. At that point, Shukla would be eligible to contest for the post.
Reacting to the speculation, Shukla told, “These are useless talks. When one spot is about to get vacant, the person next in line gets the interim charge before the election. It is a procedural thing.”
Roger Binny, elected BCCI President in October 2022, succeeded Sourav Ganguly and oversaw several major developments during his term. Under his leadership, India won two major white-ball ICC titles—the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025. He was also instrumental in launching the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which brought franchise cricket to the women’s game.
Additionally, Binny focused on boosting domestic cricket, improving player incentives, ensuring senior players’ participation, and implementing reforms for pay structures.
A legendary bowling all-rounder, Binny played 27 Tests and 72 ODIs for India, taking 47 Test wickets and 77 in ODIs. He was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 1983 World Cup, claiming 18 wickets. His cricketing and administrative career also includes a stint on the BCCI selection committee.
