Guwahati (Assam) / Shillong: In a significant development in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, four key accused were brought to Guwahati airport from Indore by Shillong Police on Wednesday morning. The accused are now being transported to Shillong for further interrogation.
The Meghalaya Police secured a seven-day transit remand for these four individuals, identified as Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, Raj Singh Kushwaha, and Anand, for deeper investigation into their alleged involvement in the murder.
Meanwhile, Sonam Raghuvanshi, wife of the deceased and the prime suspect in the case, was taken for a medical examination to Ganesh Das Hospital in Shillong early Wednesday morning. Sonam remains under a three-day transit remand with the Meghalaya Police.
According to police reports, Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was recovered on June 2 from a gorge in Sohra, near Cherrapunji, days after the couple, both residents of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, went missing during their honeymoon trip to Meghalaya. Sonam was later found near a dhaba along the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road in Uttar Pradesh.
Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed on Tuesday that some of the arrested individuals have confessed to their involvement in the crime.
“We have got the transit remand…all of them will be in Shillong tomorrow. The moment they land, we will produce them in the CJM court,” Tynsong stated.
He further added:
“Some of the accused have confessed. The moment we picked Sonam, the prime suspect, it became clear that she is fully involved in this crime.”
All five accused — including Sonam — were arrested from different locations across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Meghalaya Police was deployed to these states to track them down.
Earlier, a tense moment was witnessed at Indore airport, where a bystander, identified as Sushil Lakwani, attempted to assault one of the accused as they were being escorted by Shillong Police.
The tragic case has shocked the nation, especially as Raja and Sonam had only recently been married.
Investigation Updates:
- The accused are expected to be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Shillong after arrival.
- Police continue to probe the motive behind the murder.
- Confessions from some accused have reportedly implicated Sonam as the mastermind.
The investigation is ongoing, with the Meghalaya Police expected to provide more details following the court proceedings.
