Hyderabad, Telangana [India]: Persistent rain in Hyderabad on Monday dashed Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) hopes of making it to the IPL 2025 playoffs, as their match against Delhi Capitals was abandoned without a result.
The 55th match of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League, held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, was called off due to a wet outfield. Rain started shortly after Delhi Capitals completed their innings, which had already been played under light drizzle.
The IPL confirmed the cancellation via a post on X:
“Match 55 between @SunRisers and @DelhiCapitals has been called off due to wet outfield. Both teams share a point each.”
Both teams were awarded one point, a result that ended SRH’s slim chances of playoff qualification. Chasing a modest target of 134 runs, Hyderabad needed a full win to stay in contention.
Delhi Capitals, with this shared point, remain in the playoff race. They now stand at 13 points from 11 games, while SRH, with just seven points from 11 matches, join Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals as the third team to be eliminated from this season.
Before the washout, SRH skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl first. Delhi’s opening pair, Karun Nair and Faf du Plessis, walked out to start the innings but the top order crumbled quickly during the powerplay.
Nair (0), Du Plessis (3), Abhishek Porel (8), and Axar Patel (6) were all dismissed cheaply. At the end of six overs, Delhi were reeling at 26/4 with KL Rahul (8*) and Tristan Stubbs (0*) at the crease.
In the eighth over, with the score at 30, KL Rahul (10 off 14 balls) edged a delivery from Jaydev Unadkat to wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, leaving Delhi in deeper trouble.
The Capitals crossed the 50-run mark in the 11th over. Tristan Stubbs and Vipraj Nigam tried to stabilize the innings, putting together a 32-run partnership before Nigam was run out in the 13th over for 18 runs off 17 balls, with the team at 62.
Ashutosh Sharma then joined Stubbs as an impact substitute. The duo guided Delhi past the 100-run milestone in the 17th over, with Ashutosh finding the boundary off Pat Cummins. Their 50-run stand was completed in the 18th over when Stubbs struck a four off Eshan Malinga.
Ashutosh’s innings ended in the final over as he was dismissed by Malinga for a well-made 41 off 26 balls. Delhi finished on 133/7, with Stubbs unbeaten on 41 (36 balls) and Mitchell Starc on 1*.
For SRH, Pat Cummins led the bowling effort with figures of 3/19 in his four overs. Jaydev Unadkat (1/13), Eshan Malinga (1/28), and Harshal Patel (1/36) also picked up a wicket each.
