October 7 in New Delhi: Starting in January 2026, Indian Railways will let travelers amend the date of their confirmed tickets online without having to pay any extra fees. This is a step that will make things easier for passengers. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told about the news in an interview.
If travel plans change, passengers have to cancel their tickets and arrange new ones, which is often expensive and inconvenient.
“This system is not fair and not good for passengers,” Vaishnaw remarked. He also said that orders had been given to put the new policy into effect.
Passengers should know that they can modify the date of their tickets, but there is no guarantee that their tickets will be confirmed for the new date because it depends on seat availability. Also, if the new ticket costs more, the passengers have to pay the difference.
Right now, if you cancel your ticket 48 to 12 hours before your flight, you could have to pay up to 25% of the ticket price. If you cancel closer to your flight, the fee goes up even more. This change will save millions of travelers money on cancellation costs and provide them more freedom when making travel plans.
