The Railway Ministry on Monday issued a circular announcing a fare hike in non-AC and AC classes of mail and express trains starting July 1, 2024. The hike ranges from 1 paisa per kilometre in non-AC classes to 2 paise per kilometre for all AC classes.
However, to protect the interests of daily commuters, no changes have been made to suburban train fares or monthly season tickets, the ministry clarified.
Key Highlights of the New Fare Structure:
- Non-AC Mail/Express Trains: Fares to increase by 1 paisa per km
- AC Classes (AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier, First AC): 2 paise per km hike
- Suburban trains and season passes: No change
- Ordinary Second Class (non-express):
- No fare hike for journeys up to 500 km
- A minor increase of 0.5 paisa per km beyond 500 km
The fare increase will also apply to ordinary sleeper and first-class passengers, with a 0.5 paisa per kilometre hike coming into effect next month.
Official Confirmation
The fare hike, which was first hinted at by railway officials on June 24, has now been confirmed through an official fare table released by the ministry. The revised fare structure has been shared with zonal railways for implementation.
Officials said the changes were essential to meet rising operational costs while ensuring minimal burden on the daily traveling public. The decision to exempt suburban commuters and season ticket holders underscores the ministry’s effort to balance fiscal needs with public convenience.
