New Delhi [India], May 20: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has extended strong support to the newly released biographical film ‘Phule’, which chronicles the revolutionary lives of social reformers Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule.
Directed by Ananth Mahadevan, Phule presents the enduring legacy of the Phule couple, pioneers in the fight against caste-based oppression and gender inequality in 19th-century India.
Taking to social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi wrote:
“‘Phule’ is not just a film or a biography, it is a good initiative to recognize the history of the Bahujan society, which is missing from the mainstream of our education. More such films should be made that bring forth the Bahujan history and struggle — only by seeing, reading and recognising them will the voice of justice become louder.”
Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement adds political weight to the film’s cultural message, calling for greater visibility of marginalised histories in public discourse.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale also praised the film during a special screening held in Mumbai on May 1, 2025.
Calling it “essential viewing” for lawmakers and citizens alike, Athawale urged that Phule be made tax-free across India, and recommended it be screened for President Droupadi Murmu and members of Parliament.
“This movie is a good attempt to highlight the contributions of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule. It should be watched by everyone, especially our lawmakers, to understand the social issues it addresses,” said Athawale in a press statement.
Starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa in lead roles, Phule was released on April 25, 2025, and has already sparked important conversations around caste representation in cinema. The film faced resistance from certain groups prior to release due to its bold portrayal of caste injustices.
Director Ananth Mahadevan expressed gratitude for the minister’s support:
“The film is true to history, and we have made it with all our heart. I am glad Athawale Ji has endorsed it. Today, I am as happy as I am grateful for his wholehearted support.”
Produced by Dancing Shiva Films and Kingsmen Productions, with Zee Studios handling distribution, the film also features Vinay Pathak, Suresh Vishwakarma, and Darsheel Safary in key roles.
Phule shines a spotlight on the transformative work of the Phule couple in promoting education, social equity, and justice—messages that remain deeply relevant in contemporary India.
