Congress Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is set to visit the violence-hit Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh to meet with the families of victims, despite restrictions imposed by the local administration.
Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu criticized the government for allegedly preventing the visit, calling it an act of “dictatorship.” He emphasized Gandhi’s right to observe and address the situation, stating:
“Why is the Govt stopping us? What are they trying to hide? If the LoP does not visit the site, how will he raise the issue in Parliament?”
Congress Mobilization:
Congress workers gathered at the Ghazipur border on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway to support Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in their efforts. Avinash Pande, Congress General Secretary and Uttar Pradesh in-charge, called on supporters to join the delegation, describing the visit as part of a “struggle for democracy and justice.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pande encouraged large-scale participation:
“Rahul Gandhi ji will meet the families of the Sambhal violence victims. To support them in this struggle, we will proceed from the Ghazipur border.”
Government’s Stance:
The local administration, led by Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh, has urged Gandhi to reconsider his visit. The District Magistrate has restricted the entry of outsiders into Sambhal until December 10, citing concerns about maintaining peace.
Singh explained:
“The situation is stabilizing but remains tense. The presence of outsiders may escalate tensions. We appeal to all to avoid visiting Sambhal temporarily to allow the restoration of normalcy.”
Background of the Violence:
The clashes in Sambhal erupted on November 24 during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) investigation of a Mughal-era mosque. The examination followed a petition claiming the mosque was built on the site of an ancient Harihar temple.
The violence resulted in:
- Four fatalities
- Injuries among police personnel and locals
While the situation has since improved, the region remains under heightened surveillance.
Congress’ Position:
The Congress party has condemned the incident and called for justice for the victims. Ajay Kumar Lallu said:
“Rahul Gandhi will surely visit Sambhal and meet the victims’ families to ensure their voices are heard in Parliament.”
This development underscores the ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition over sensitive communal and social issues.
