Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Modi Over Economic Turmoil Amid Trump’s Tariff Moves

New Delhi [India], April 7: Amidst global stock market volatility sparked by US reciprocal tariffs, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and called for a shift towards a resilient, production-based economy in India.

Taking to social media platform X, Gandhi remarked, “Trump has blown the lid off the illusion. Reality is biting back. PM Modi is nowhere to be seen.” He emphasized that India must confront the new global economic realities and work towards building a self-reliant economy that benefits all citizens.

Addressing the Samvidhan Suraksha Sammelan in Patna earlier in the day, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha pointed to the sharp decline in stock markets caused by recent actions of US President Donald Trump. “The US president has led to a tumble in the stock market. Less than 1% of our people have money invested there, which means it doesn’t serve the common Indian. Huge profits are made, but the benefits don’t reach you,” he said.

The global market rout began after President Trump announced a strict enforcement of tariff reciprocity. Under this approach, the United States plans to match the tariffs imposed by other countries — including India — in an effort to push for fairer trade. These announcements have triggered a massive sell-off in equities worldwide, with Indian markets also taking a significant hit.
