Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday, emphasized the need for a caste census, linking it to Dr. BR Ambedkar’s historic Mahad Satyagraha. He discussed the ongoing struggles of Dalits with Professor Sukhadeo Thorat, a member of Telangana’s caste survey panel.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi stated:
“The fight for share that began 98 years ago continues. On 20 March 1927, Babasaheb Ambedkar directly challenged caste discrimination through the Mahad Satyagraha. This was not just a fight for the water right, but also for equality and respect.”
Key Points from Gandhi-Thorat Discussion
✅ Caste Census is Crucial: Gandhi reiterated that a caste census is essential to uncover social inequalities, accusing opponents of trying to suppress the truth.
✅ Dalit Access to Governance & Education: The discussion focused on the continued marginalization of Dalits in governance, bureaucracy, and education.
✅ Ambedkar’s Unfinished Fight: Gandhi stressed that Ambedkar’s struggle is still relevant today and must continue with full force.
✅ Opposition to Caste Census: He criticized those opposing the caste census, claiming they want to conceal socio-economic disparities.
Gandhi’s remarks have once again placed the demand for a caste census at the center of political discourse, as the issue gains momentum in several states, including Telangana.
