In his first response to the Congress party’s massive setback in the Bihar Assembly elections, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said that the election “was not fair from the very beginning.” His reaction came after it became evident that the Mahagathbandhan would fail to cross even 40 seats, while the NDA surged ahead with more than 200 seats in the 243-member Assembly.
Posting on X on Friday, Gandhi said the results were “surprising” and emphasised that the broader fight is now focused on safeguarding the Constitution and democratic values.
Although he did not directly use the term “vote theft,” Gandhi made a pointed remark referencing the issue — something he has consistently raised in recent months. He had even led a Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar earlier, demanding electoral transparency.
Expressing gratitude to supporters, he wrote,
“I express my heartfelt gratitude to those millions of voters in Bihar who expressed their trust in the Mahagathbandhan. This result in Bihar is truly surprising. We could not achieve victory in an election that was not fair from the very beginning.”
Gandhi added that the Congress and the INDIA alliance will closely analyse the outcome and strengthen their campaign to protect democratic institutions.
“This fight is for the protection of the Constitution and democracy. The Congress party and the INDIA alliance will deeply review this result and make their efforts to save democracy even more effective,” he said.
