During Neha Dhupia’s “Freedom to Feed” live session, actress Radhika Apte talked honestly about how her pregnancy was treated very differently on two different film projects: one in India and one in Hollywood. Apte, who had a baby in December 2024, talked on how working mothers in the Indian entertainment business still experience discrimination and a lack of empathy.
An Indian Producer’s Cold Reception
When Apte told the directors and producers she was working with that she was pregnant, one of the Indian producers gave her a very negative response. She said, “An Indian producer I was working with wasn’t happy about the news.” “He was cold to me and even told me to wear tight clothes, even though I was uncomfortable and bloated.”
Apte was in her first trimester and going through physical changes and cravings, but instead of understanding, she was met with insensitivity. “I couldn’t even see a doctor when I was in pain and not feeling well on set.” She said, “That really made me sad.”
A Good Difference on a Global Project
The actor, on the other hand, said that working on a Hollywood movie at the same time was a good experience. The person who made the movie was helpful and understanding. “When I told him I was eating more than normal and would look like a new person by the conclusion of the shoot, he smiled and said, ‘Don’t worry, even if you’re a different person by the end of this project, it’s fine. “Because you’re pregnant.”
Apte said that this kind of comfort and warmth “meant the world to me.” She made it clear that she didn’t want special treatment; she just wanted “some empathy, kindness, and basic humanity after sharing a personal and happy piece of news.”
