Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu on Thursday reiterated that staying injury-free and mentally strong remains her foremost priority as she gradually builds toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The former world champion, making her competitive return after a lengthy injury layoff, delivered a commanding performance at the Malaysia Open, defeating eighth-seeded Japanese shuttler Tomoka Miyazaki 21-8, 21-13 to book her place in the quarterfinals.
Sindhu, who had been sidelined since October due to a foot injury, underlined that physical fitness is essential for sustaining performance at the highest level of international badminton.
“Firstly, I would focus on staying healthy and staying fit. That’s very important for an athlete to stay injury-free. That’s when you can actually go out there and give your 100 percent,” said the 30-year-old star from Hyderabad.
She also stressed the importance of mental resilience, particularly during recovery phases following injuries.
“You also have to be mentally strong. When you’re injured and when you’re coming back, that’s when it’s very important to stay mentally strong and be prepared for everything, because sometimes you might have bad days. It’s important to believe and come back stronger,” Sindhu said.
When asked about her long-term ambitions and whether she is targeting the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, Sindhu made it clear that she is not rushing her comeback and prefers a measured, step-by-step approach.
“The body is like a temple; you have to take care of it. For me, it’s one day at a time. I hope I stay fit, give my best and I will be playing for a couple of more years,” she added.
Reflecting on her match against Miyazaki, Sindhu said careful preparation and constant alertness were crucial, especially as it was her first tournament appearance of the season.
“Today I was prepared and ready for long rallies and her shots as well. Overall, it was important for me to be on court, be alert all the time and give my 100 percent because it’s my first tournament of the season,” she said.
Sindhu’s confident return has provided a positive boost for Indian badminton as she continues her journey back to peak form with an eye on long-term goals.
