Moscow [Russia], June 6: In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump held an extensive 70-minute telephonic conversation, discussing a range of global issues including the stalled US-Iran nuclear deal talks, the Ukraine conflict, and future prospects of Russia-US cooperation, according to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov.
Ushakov said the discussion prominently featured the deadlock in US-Iran nuclear negotiations, during which Trump reportedly sought Russia’s help in re-engaging Tehran.
“Trump believes Russia’s assistance may be essential and would welcome Moscow’s engagement with Iran on this matter,” Ushakov stated.
The two leaders also addressed the ongoing Ukraine war, with Putin briefing Trump on the second round of direct Russian-Ukrainian peace talks held in Istanbul. Putin accused Ukraine of sabotaging diplomatic efforts through attacks on civilian infrastructure.
“These targeted strikes on civilians, allegedly ordered by Kyiv, constitute acts of terrorism under international law,” Ushakov claimed, calling the Ukrainian government a “terrorist organisation.”
Despite these tensions, Ushakov stressed that the Istanbul talks were productive and that memorandums from the meeting would now be examined in both Moscow and Kyiv.
“Putin extensively covered the outcomes and reaffirmed hope that talks will continue,” he said.
On Ukraine-related military developments, Trump reportedly denied prior knowledge of airstrikes on military airfields, suggesting a disconnect between the US administration and some military operations.
The conversation also included discussions on rebuilding Russia-US cooperation.
“Both leaders acknowledged the enormous potential in restoring ties across various sectors,” Ushakov revealed.
Both Putin and Trump agreed to maintain open lines of communication, and expressed appreciation for Trump’s Special Envoy, Steven Witkoff, who was credited for facilitating diplomatic engagement.
Ushakov concluded by describing the conversation as “positive and highly productive”, indicating possible thawing in relations amid global tensions.
