Russian President Vladimir Putin has called his meeting with US President Donald Trump “timely” and “very useful.” Speaking to top Kremlin officials in Moscow on Saturday, Putin said that the two leaders discussed ways of ending the war in Ukraine “on a fair basis.”
The comments came a day after the Alaska Summit, where Putin stepped on US soil for the first time in a decade. “The conversation was very frank, substantive, and, in my opinion, brings us closer to the necessary decisions,” he said.
The meeting between the two leaders lasted for over three hours. Neither Trump nor Putin took questions from reporters, but both offered warm words about their interaction. “We are not there yet, but we have made progress,” Trump said, adding, “There is no deal until there’s a deal.” He called the meeting “extremely productive” and said many points had been agreed upon, but did not offer specifics.
According to a letter from Melania Trump to Putin that was delivered by her husband, Putin reportedly agreed with Trump that the war would not have happened if Trump had been president instead of Joe Biden when the invasion was launched in 2022.
