Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh on Wednesday condemned the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed several lives and left many injured. Calling it a “cowardly act by anti-social elements,” he extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
“This is a cowardly act. My condolences are with the affected families. We are determined as a nation to provide a fitting response. The victims will be brought to justice,” Singh told media.
His statement comes amid a sweeping security response across Jammu and Kashmir, with Indian Army units and police forces launching intensive search operations in the Baisran area of Pahalgam and surrounding regions to track down the attackers.
PM Modi Cuts Short Saudi Visit, Briefs Top Security Officials
In a strong gesture of urgency and national solidarity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his state visit to Saudi Arabia following the Pahalgam attack. PM Modi, who was in Riyadh at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, skipped the official dinner and returned to New Delhi early Wednesday morning—almost 12 hours ahead of schedule.
Immediately after landing at Palam Airport, the Prime Minister convened a high-level briefing with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and other senior officials to assess the situation and review India’s security strategy.
Nationwide Protests and Candlelight Vigils
The brutal attack, which targeted innocent tourists in the Pahalgam area of Anantnag, has sent shockwaves across the country. Mass candlelight marches and protests erupted in Baramulla, Srinagar, Kupwara, and Poonch, with residents uniting in grief and outrage.
In Jammu, Bajrang Dal workers staged demonstrations, while in Khod village of the Akhoor area, villagers held a solemn candlelight protest demanding justice for the victims.
Search Operations Underway, Casualty Count Awaited
The Indian Army and J&K Police have cordoned off large parts of Anantnag district, including Pahalgam, and are conducting combing operations to track the attackers. Meanwhile, the official number of casualties has not yet been confirmed by the government.
This coordinated wave of condemnation, action, and solidarity reflects the nation’s resolve in the face of terror, as authorities intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
