Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann strongly condemned the assassination attempt on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at the Golden Temple in Amritsar and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
Details of the Incident
- The attack occurred while Badal was performing penance (‘tankhah’) under religious punishment imposed by the Akal Takht Sahib for alleged misconduct during his tenure as Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister (2007–2017).
- The assailant, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, was arrested at the scene. Punjab police confirmed that Chaura has over 21 criminal cases registered against him.
CM Bhagwant Mann’s Statement
Addressing the press, CM Mann expressed relief that the alertness of Punjab Police prevented a major tragedy.
“It is an unfortunate incident. Due to the alertness of Punjab Police personnel, a big incident was averted. The accused was arrested on the spot. I have ordered a thorough probe into the incident, and the motive behind the attack will be revealed soon. We will not allow conspiracies aimed at defaming the state to succeed.”
Mann also assured the public of heightened security, noting that 175 police personnel have been deployed in Amritsar.
“An unbiased investigation will be conducted, and those found guilty will be punished,” he stated.

Special DGP (Law & Order) Arpit Shukla highlighted the criminal background of the attacker:
“This person has been arrested, and he has a previous criminal background with more than 21 cases registered against him. Interrogation is ongoing, and further details will be shared as the investigation progresses.”
Background on Sukhbir Singh Badal’s Penance
Badal was declared a ‘tankhaiya’ (guilty of religious misconduct) by the Akal Takht in August 2023, citing decisions made by the SAD-led Punjab government from 2007 to 2017.
- As part of his religious punishment, Badal has been performing ‘sewadar’ duties, including washing utensils, cleaning shoes, and maintaining bathrooms at the Golden Temple.
