Pune Sees Sudden ‘Winter-Like’ Weather After Hailstorm; IMD Issues Rain & Thunderstorm Alert

A sudden spell of heavy rain and hailstorms transformed parts of Pune into a “winter-like” landscape, disrupting normal life and causing waterlogging across several areas of the city.

Neighbourhoods such as Aundh, Baner, Mhalunge, and Balewadi were among the worst affected, with intense rainfall and strong winds leading to traffic congestion and slowed movement during peak hours. Several roads were flooded, making commuting difficult for residents.

IMD Issues Weather Alert

The India Meteorological Department has forecast more unstable weather conditions. For Tuesday, March 31, light rainfall is expected along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

A yellow alert has been issued for Pune till April 2, warning of intermittent rain and storm activity over the next few days.

What Caused the Sudden Weather Change?

Experts link the sudden shift to evolving atmospheric conditions over western India. Moisture from the Arabian Sea combined with instability in the lower atmosphere has created favourable conditions for thunderstorms.

Such weather patterns are common during the pre-monsoon phase, when temperature differences intensify and trigger sudden storms.

Week Ahead: Unpredictable Conditions

The coming days in Pune are expected to remain unpredictable, with a mix of heat, cloud cover, and scattered thunderstorms. Wind speeds could range between 20–30 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 40 kmph, especially during afternoons and evenings.

Viral videos on social media showing hail-covered streets have added to the “winter-like” description, although their authenticity has not been independently verified.
