In a surprising turn of events, Pune Police have stated that the man arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 22-year-old techie is not a stranger, as initially claimed, but someone known to her.
“They know each other for a couple of years and belong to the same community,” said police commissioner, reported PTI.
Contrary to initial reports, the suspect was reportedly a friend of the woman. Police also revealed that a widely circulated selfie, which showed the alleged perpetrator with a caption “I’ll be back,” was taken by the woman herself.
“It was also the woman herself who took the selfie with the man along with a purported chilling message that read – ‘I’ll be back,’” said police commissioner Amitesh Kumar.
The suspect, described as a highly qualified professional, was arrested on Friday — two days after the woman alleged that a man disguised as a delivery agent forcibly entered her rented flat and raped her.
According to the police, the original selfie taken by the woman showed the man’s face clearly. However, it was later edited and overlaid with the threatening message. Additionally, forensic analysis revealed no use of any chemical spray, contrary to the woman’s initial claim of being made unconscious.
“We are still ascertaining why the victim made allegations of rape and it is still under investigation as the girl’s mental state is not good at present,” Commissioner Kumar added.
The case remains under investigation as authorities attempt to piece together the motive behind the fabricated narrative.
