Puducherry Education Minister A Namachivayam announced a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges on Tuesday (December 3) due to heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Fengal.
Chief Minister N Rangaswamy detailed the state’s relief measures, stating that the government will provide Rs 5,000 to all ration cardholders impacted by the cyclone. “Due to Cyclone Fengal, Puducherry received 48% rainfall, which was unexpected,” he said.
Relief for Farmers and Fishermen
The cyclone caused widespread damage, with over 10,000 hectares of crops destroyed. To support affected farmers, the government has pledged Rs 30,000 per hectare in compensation. Additionally, Rs 10,000 will be provided to repair 50 damaged fishing boats.
Severe Flooding in Puducherry
Cyclone Fengal unleashed torrential rains, inundating over 200 homes in NR Nagar near the Sankaraparani River. Rescue operations by the Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are underway, with boats deployed to evacuate stranded residents and ensure their safety.
The coastal areas of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were the hardest hit, with many regions still grappling with waterlogged streets and disrupted daily life.
