Pro-Khalistan Supporters Disrupt India’s Independence Day Celebrations In Australia

According to The Australia Today, a group of pro-Khalistan activists stopped a celebration in Melbourne, Australia, on Friday to honor India’s 79th Independence Day. The incident happened outside the Indian embassy, when people from the Indian diaspora were waving the Indian flag and chanting patriotic songs.

A video going around on social media shows the pro-Khalistan supporters waving their own flags in response to the protest. The video also shows the two groups arguing verbally, but local authorities who got there stopped it from getting worse.

This is the most recent in a string of pro-Khalistan events in Australia. Last month, hate graffiti was found on a Swaminarayan temple and two Asian businesses in Melbourne. Also, an Indian man was attacked in Adelaide, and officials looked into whether it was a racially motivated crime. In early 2024, pro-Khalistani fans and Indian cricket fans fought during a test match between India and Australia.

In other parts of the world, like Ireland, hate crimes against Indians have also been on the rise. Recently, a six-year-old Indian child was attacked there. Michael D Higgins, the President of Ireland, has denounced the attacks and urged for stern punishment for those who did them.
