Priyanka Gandhi’s ‘Kerala Kasuva Saree’ At Oath Ceremony Evokes Memories Of Grandmother Indira Gandhi

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s debut in the Lok Sabha was not just a political milestone, but a moment rich in symbolism. Dressed in a traditional Kerala Kasavu saree, Priyanka’s attire harkened back to the days when her grandmother, Indira Gandhi, often wore similar sarees while serving as Prime Minister.

Priyanka, who took her oath as the Member of Parliament from Wayanad on Thursday, stood with a copy of the Constitution in hand, her choice of clothing conveying a deeper significance. The Kerala Kasavu saree, known for its cultural resonance, was a respectful tribute to the people of Wayanad, the constituency that had elected her.

Many observers noted the striking resemblance between Priyanka and Indira Gandhi, evoking memories of the three-time Prime Minister’s own powerful persona and connection with the masses. Indira Gandhi was known for using her attire as a way to connect with the common people, and Priyanka’s choice seemed to reflect this same spirit of humility and unity.

When asked by the media whether she had thoughts of her grandmother during the ceremony, Priyanka responded, “Yes, I did remember her, and I also remembered my father.”

The Kasavu saree, a hallmark of Kerala’s cultural heritage, carries a deeper meaning, symbolizing the unity and identity of the state. Priyanka’s choice to wear it during such an important moment also seemed to acknowledge her connection to the people of Wayanad, where she had won a decisive victory.

Alongside Priyanka, her family members were present at the oath-taking ceremony, including her mother Sonia Gandhi, brother Rahul Gandhi, and children Raihan and Miraya Vadra.

Priyanka Gandhi secured the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections with a commanding margin of 4,10,931 votes, defeating Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI). The contest in Wayanad was a triangular battle between Priyanka, BJP’s Navya Haridas, and CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri. The seat was vacated by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, after he shifted to Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh following his election from both seats.

In addition to Priyanka, Congress leader Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan also took his oath as a Member of Parliament after winning the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in a by-election, with a victory margin of 5,86,788 votes. The Nanded seat had become vacant following the passing of the sitting MP, Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.

The recent by-elections held across 48 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats in 15 states saw significant contests, with Priyanka Gandhi making her electoral debut in Wayanad.
