New Delhi [India]: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took the oath as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, holding a copy of the Constitution. Her family members, including mother Sonia Gandhi, brother Rahul Gandhi, and her children, Raihan and Miraya Vadra, were present at Parliament for the occasion.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the recent elections with a significant margin of 4,10,931 votes, defeating Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI). The Wayanad seat, a Congress stronghold, saw a triangular contest between Priyanka Gandhi, BJP’s Navya Haridas, and CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri.
Expressing her gratitude, Priyanka Gandhi shared on X (formerly Twitter) after receiving her certificate of election on Wednesday, calling it a symbol of love, trust, and a commitment to shared values. “For me, it is not just a document; it is a symbol of your love, trust, and the values we are committed to. Thank you, Wayanad, for choosing me to take forward this journey to build a better future for yourselves,” she wrote.
The Wayanad seat had been vacated by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who previously represented the constituency but shifted to Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh after winning the Lok Sabha election there earlier this year.
In another development, Congress leader Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan also took the oath as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. Chavan won the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in a by-election with 5,86,788 votes, following the death of the sitting Congress MP, Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan, which led to the bypoll.
The by-elections, held across 15 states, included 48 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats, with notable contests in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad, Kerala, where Priyanka Gandhi made her electoral debut.
