New Delhi [India]: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially took oath as the Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad on Thursday. Her husband, Robert Vadra, expressed pride in her achievement and emphasized the strength she would bring to the Congress party and her brother, Rahul Gandhi.
“There will be more strength for Rahul in Parliament. Priyanka has her own style of handling issues in politics. She has learnt a lot from all the generations in her family. She will definitely support Rahul and add strength to the party. Whatever promises she made to the people of Wayanad, I know that she will complete those,” said Robert Vadra while speaking to ANI.
Robert Vadra described the moment as a proud one for their family and addressed questions about Priyanka holding the Constitution during her oath. “Like Rahul always does, we all feel that the Constitution is prime and everyone holds it in high esteem. It should not be changed or played with or used for political purposes. She reiterated what Rahul and the Congress felt. It was a very strong message,” he said.
He also noted Priyanka’s choice to wear a traditional Kerala Kasavu saree during the ceremony, which reminded many of a young Indira Gandhi. Vadra explained it as a “thanking gesture” to the people of Wayanad. “Even if the people told her that she would win, she visited every part of the constituency and listened to everyone. She worked day and night. For the first time, she has worked for herself rather than for the Congress and other ministers. A lot of people felt that she looked like Indira Ji. She does have the similarity,” he remarked.
Vadra expressed hope that Priyanka would address critical issues like farmers’ concerns, women’s safety, inflation, religion-based politics, and the misuse of government agencies.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra won the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 4,10,931 votes, defeating Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI). Wayanad, traditionally a Congress stronghold, witnessed a three-way contest between Gandhi, BJP’s Navya Haridas, and CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri.
