Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra delivered a spirited defense of her brother and Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, during a historic Lok Sabha debate on Tuesday.
Reacting to the ruling party’s criticisms, she asserted that Rahul Gandhi is the only leader who has consistently “refused to bow” to the government over the last 12 years. Her remarks came amidst a high-stakes 10-hour discussion on a no-confidence motion moved against Speaker Om Birla.
Priyanka’s intervention followed a series of jibes from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who had mocked Rahul Gandhi’s past parliamentary conduct—specifically the 2018 “hug and wink” incident. In her rebuttal, Priyanka took a swipe at the government’s sudden invocation of Jawaharlal Nehru to defend the Speaker’s authority. She noted the irony of the BJP praising Nehru—whom they often criticize—simply to suit their current parliamentary arguments.
The motion against Speaker Birla, moved by Congress MP Mohammad Jawed and backed by 118 Opposition members, alleges partisan conduct and the systematic “throttling” of Opposition voices through microphone silencing and mass suspensions. Priyanka emphasized that the treasury benches “cannot digest the truth” spoken by Gandhi, framing his defiance as a stand for democratic integrity.
