Prime Video Unveils Sophie Turner’s First Look As Lara Croft In Upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ Series, Internet Divided

Prime Video on Thursday revealed the first look of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft for its upcoming Tomb Raider series, based on the hugely popular video game franchise. The streaming platform shared the image on its official Instagram handle, instantly setting off a wave of reactions across social media.

In the photo, Sophie is seen wearing a green top paired with black shorts, accessorised with dark sunglasses, offering a modern yet classic take on the legendary character. The image was captioned, “Get your artifacts out. Lara’s on her way… #TombRaider #WardrobeTest.”

While the reveal excited many fans, the internet remained sharply divided over the look.

Internet Reacts to Sophie Turner’s First Look

Several fans were quick to praise Sophie’s transformation. One user wrote, “Oh my god! She looks perfect! I didn’t expect they would go with a look so classic!” Another commented, “And this is just the wardrobe test! I told y’all Sophie could definitely pull the look!”

Other positive reactions included comments like, “Unreal. Literally classic coded,” and “Now that is one hell of a transformation.” Some fans, however, couldn’t help but compare her to earlier portrayals, with one writing, “That looks pretty good. But I miss Angelina Jolie. Angelina Jolie forever.”

Criticism also poured in from a section of viewers who felt the look lacked Lara Croft’s signature intensity. One comment read, “Love everything related to the classics, but she looks like a Scandinavian Lara. Where’s the prominent look? Strong face features?” Another user said, “Her face doesn’t give me Lara at all. She has a very different kind of beauty than Lara.”

Some reactions were even harsher. “Is this for real? This looks worse than some cosplayers,” wrote one user, while another remarked, “She doesn’t look like she could fight her way out of Sephora, much less take on armies of mercenaries.” A few users even speculated whether the image was AI-generated, with comments like, “Is this AI?” and “That’s AI, don’t tell me anything else.”

All About the ‘Tomb Raider’ Series

The Tomb Raider series will stream exclusively on Prime Video and features a strong ensemble cast. Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Celia Imrie, Bill Paterson, and several others play key roles, with many portraying well-known characters from the video games.

The series also introduces new characters created specifically for the show. Sigourney Weaver plays Evelyn Wallis, a powerful figure seeking to exploit Lara’s skills. Celia Imrie stars as Francine, a senior official at the British Museum, while Sasha Luss portrays Sasha, a formidable rival to Lara. Jack Bannon, Paterson Joseph, Juliette Motamed, John Heffernan, and August Wittgenstein round out the cast in pivotal roles.

The series is created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also serves as executive producer and co-showrunner. Chad Hodge is the co-showrunner and executive producer, while Jonathan Van Tulleken directs the series. The project is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, in association with Crystal Dynamics and Legendary Television.

The release date of the series has not yet been announced.

Sophie Turner on Playing Lara Croft

Earlier, Sophie Turner spoke about stepping into the role of Lara Croft, saying she has long admired the character and views her as a powerful symbol in a male-dominated world.

“I’ve been a long-time fan of Tomb Raider and the character of Lara. She has always felt, for me, very emboldened in a male-dominated world. She’s a fierce female role model!” Sophie said in a statement quoted by news agency ANI.
