NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a message on X to congratulate Sushila Karki on becoming the Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim administration. The appointment comes amid weeks of major political instability in the Himalayan country next door.
“I wish Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki all the best as she takes over as Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal.” “India is still fully committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal,” PM Modi wrote.
Sushila Karki, who used to be Nepal’s Chief Justice, took the oath of office on Friday after K.P. Sharma Oli, the country’s previous Prime Minister, stepped down. The action occurred after a lot of rallies against corruption, mostly led by Nepal’s “Gen Z,” which had thrown the country into a political crisis.
The youth-led protest organization suggested Karki’s name, and the major political parties agreed. They gave her the job of running a transitional administration and setting up new elections within six months. Karki is the first woman to be Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court. She is known for being very against corruption, which was one of the main demands of the protesters.
rallies against a social media ban started the political unrest that led to the formation of this interim government. The rallies swiftly grew into a larger movement against political elites, nepotism, and systemic corruption. The uprising caused violent fights, the burning of government buildings, and the resignation of the Oli government.
Karki, who also went to Banaras Hindu University (BHU), has said nice things about India and its leaders in the past. In a recent interview, she said, “I have a good impression about Modi ji.” People regard her appointment as a step toward bringing back stability and holding new elections in a country that has been shaken by a lack of leadership and civil upheaval.
