New Delhi [India]: President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the vital role of medical professionals in alleviating suffering, protecting lives, and contributing to societal well-being during the convocation ceremony of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi on Monday.
In her address, the President highlighted that the medical profession is more than just a livelihood—it is a sacred responsibility. “The medical profession is not just a means of livelihood. It is a profession that brings with it the sacred responsibility of reducing people’s suffering, treating the sick, and contributing to the well-being of society,” she said.
She stressed that patients are not merely medical cases but human beings navigating illness, fear, and hope. Beyond treatment, patients need compassion and encouragement, and a doctor’s role extends to being a compassionate healer.
President Murmu also underscored the importance of technological advancements in the medical field, noting that collaboration between medical and engineering institutions is critical. “Experiments in Artificial Intelligence, mRNA technology, Robotics, and 3D Bioprinting are going to bring about massive changes in the medical field,” she said. She encouraged Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital to collaborate with Delhi’s engineering and technology institutes to foster research and innovation.
Reflecting on the government’s efforts to build a ‘Healthy India,’ President Murmu acknowledged progress but emphasized the need for skilled and dedicated doctors to maximize the potential of the country’s health infrastructure.
As India aims to become a developed nation by 2047, the President called on young doctors to contribute significantly to this vision through education, research, and entrepreneurship in healthcare.
She lauded Safdarjung Hospital for its commitment to patient care, noting that the facility serves approximately 10,000 people daily from across the country. She commended the hospital for its initiatives in patient safety and convenience, highlighting its state-of-the-art services, including robotic renal transplants, robotic cardiothoracic surgeries, and bone marrow transplants at low costs.
