Nation Remembers the Courage and Sacrifice of Soldiers Who Secured India’s Victory and Bangladesh’s Liberation
New Delhi, December 16: President Droupadi Murmu paid heartfelt tribute to the soldiers who exhibited “indomitable courage” during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, commemorated annually as Vijay Diwas. She hailed their “ultimate sacrifice” as a source of inspiration for every Indian.
In a post on X, the President of India’s office wrote:
“On Vijay Diwas, I pay homage to our valiant soldiers who displayed indomitable courage during the 1971 war, securing victory for India. A grateful nation remembers the ultimate sacrifice of our brave hearts whose stories inspire every Indian and shall remain a source of national pride.”
Celebrating Vijay Diwas
Vijay Diwas, celebrated on December 16, marks India’s historic victory against Pakistan in a 13-day war that culminated in the signing of the Instrument of Surrender in Dhaka. This decisive victory led to the liberation of Bangladesh (then East Pakistan).
During the 1971 war, 3,900 Indian soldiers laid down their lives, and 9,851 were injured.
Vice President and Leaders Pay Tribute
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar also honored the sacrifices of India’s armed forces. In a post on X, he stated:
“On Vijay Diwas, we pay homage to the martyrs of the 1971 war and honour the unmatched gallantry of our armed forces. Their heroic valour and selfless sacrifices, which led to a historic triumph, continue to inspire every Indian. We remain forever indebted to their service to the nation.”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi joined President Murmu and Vice President Dhankhar in attending a commemorative reception at the Army House.
Joint Commemoration with Bangladesh
Marking the 53rd anniversary, India and Bangladesh will jointly commemorate Vijay Diwas with the annual exchange of war veterans and serving officers. This tradition underscores the shared legacy and enduring bond between the two nations forged during the 1971 war.
