New Delhi [India]: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is set to present a government resolution in the State Assembly on Wednesday, advocating for the retrieval of Katchatheevu Island.
The resolution argues that reclaiming Katchatheevu is the only long-term solution to safeguard the traditional fishing rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen and address the challenges they face due to the actions of the Sri Lankan Navy.
Stalin’s proposal urges the Union Government to review the Indo-Sri Lankan agreement and take necessary steps to reclaim the disputed island. Additionally, it calls upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the release of detained Indian fishermen and their boats with the Sri Lankan government during his upcoming official visit.
The resolution, which underscores the urgent need for a permanent resolution, is expected to be put forward for a unanimous vote in the Assembly.
Delimitation Concerns and Stalin’s Meeting Request
Alongside the Katchatheevu issue, CM MK Stalin has formally requested a meeting with Union Government officials to present a memorandum on concerns regarding the proposed delimitation.
Stalin, along with MPs from various political parties, intends to emphasize their united stance on the issue, which is considered critical for the people of Tamil Nadu. His request follows the Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting in Chennai, where resolutions were passed demanding a fair and transparent delimitation process.
“I have requested a meeting with you, alongside MPs from various parties, to present our memorandum on the concerns surrounding the proposed delimitation. This follows resolutions from the Joint Action Committee meeting for Fair Delimitation in Chennai. As previously mentioned, we urgently seek your time to convey our united stance on this critical issue for our people. Awaiting your earliest response,” posted CM Stalin on X.
Joint Action Committee’s United Stand
On March 22, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin chaired the first meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) in Chennai to address delimitation concerns. The meeting was attended by:
- Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar
- Telangana CM Revanth Reddy
- Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan
- Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann
- Other prominent political leaders
Following the meeting, the Joint Action Committee adopted a unanimous resolution, asserting that any delimitation exercise by the Centre must be conducted transparently and in consultation with all stakeholders.
With the retrieval of Katchatheevu Island and the delimitation issue gaining momentum, the upcoming discussions are set to play a crucial role in shaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
