Preparations In Full Swing For Mahakumbh Mela 2025 In Prayagraj

As the grand Mahakumbh Mela 2025 approaches, Prayagraj is abuzz with intense preparations to accommodate an anticipated influx of around 40 crore devotees and visitors. The event, scheduled from January 13 to February 26, 2025, will feature the traditional ‘Shahi Snan’ and other spiritual activities at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati rivers.

Infrastructure and Amenities

Efforts are underway to enhance infrastructure and amenities for visitors. Special Shahi Paths are being constructed for different Akharas, ensuring smooth processions during the sacred baths. Additionally, colourful and well-equipped tents are being erected to host saints and pilgrims.

Anil Rajguru, a tent contractor, shared details about the progress:

“We are building 128 rooms, each equipped with attached toilets and bathrooms. Most of the work is expected to be completed by January 11, well ahead of the Mela’s commencement.”

Railway’s Role in Crowd Management

With crowd management being a major concern, the North Central Railway has implemented a detailed plan to handle the massive influx:

  • Uni-directional Movement: To avoid chaos, the movement of pilgrims will be uni-directional, preventing criss-cross patterns.
  • Yatri-Kendra System: Passengers will be guided to designated centres before proceeding to their platforms, reducing congestion.
  • Ring Rail Service: A special circular rail service will connect key religious sites, including Chitrakoot, Banaras, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj, offering seamless travel options for devotees.

The railway’s operations during the Mahakumbh include:

  • 13,000 Trains Over 50 Days:
    • 10,000 regular trains
    • 3,000 special trains, including 700 long-distance Mela Special Trains and 1,800 short-distance trains for 200-300 km routes.

Shashikant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Central Railway, emphasized the importance of coordination in ensuring a safe and smooth experience for pilgrims.

Challenges and Expectations

Handling a gathering of this magnitude presents logistical challenges, but authorities remain optimistic. Collaborations between civil administration, Indian Railways, and other agencies aim to ensure a successful event.

The Mahakumbh Mela 2025 promises a blend of spirituality, culture, and tourism, drawing global attention to the rich heritage of Prayagraj.
