Union Minister Prahlad Joshi on Tuesday assured that the Maharashtra government is taking stringent action against those responsible for the recent violence in Nagpur, which led to widespread unrest in parts of the city. Joshi stated, “Govt is handling the situation very well and such things should not happen… It is not about this party or that party, whoever has done wrong, Maharashtra govt is taking action against them.”
The violence erupted over demands to remove the grave of Aurangzeb. Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs also condemned the unrest. BJP MP Ashok Chavan described the violence as a “sad incident” and confirmed that the police had brought the situation under control. He emphasized, “The truth will come out after investigation,” and expressed his belief that communal riots should not occur on such issues in a progressive state like Maharashtra.
Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde called for peace and assured the public that the police are investigating if the violence was part of a “pre-planned conspiracy.” Shinde revealed, “Four DCP-level officers were injured in this incident. Police have said that many people came from outside. Petrol bombs were also hurled.”
The Maharashtra government imposed a curfew in multiple areas of Nagpur under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) following the unrest. The curfew will remain in place until further notice and applies to several police station limits, including Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, and others, according to an official notification from Nagpur Commissioner of Police Ravinder Kumar Singal.
