JAMMU – Heavy rains that have been falling nonstop have caused flash floods and landslides all throughout Jammu and Kashmir. One part of the Fourth Tawi Bridge fell down. A widely shared video of the event shows a section of the road surface collapsing, leaving an SUV stuck dangerously on the brink of the new hole while people shout for the people inside to run to safety.
The bridge over the Tawi River in Jammu has been badly damaged by the rain, which has been falling nonstop for more than 36 hours. Officials said that the swelling Tawi River has been causing a lot of damage in the area, including washing away the road that connects the Fourth Tawi Bridge to Bikram Chowk.
Officials said that the water levels in waterways have reached a “danger mark,” which is why the district administration is taking steps to protect people. Kathua DC Rajesh Sharma said that schools have been told to close and field staff are on the ground to let people know.
The bridge falling down is just one of many things that have happened in the area. The floods has also killed a lot of people. On Tuesday, a different landslide on the way to the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine at Adhkuwari killed nine pilgrims and hurt 21 more. The Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, and local authorities are all working to rescue people and get them out of flooded low-lying areas across the region.
Reports say that the Tawi Bridge, which opened in 2013, has had problems with its structure in the past. This most recent event shows how weak the region’s infrastructure is when it comes to severe weather.
