Pope Francis Suffers Two Episodes Of Respiratory Distress Amid Pneumonia Battle

Pope Francis experienced two episodes of “acute respiratory insufficiency” on Monday as he continues to fight pneumonia, according to the Holy See Press Office. The 88-year-old pontiff’s condition is being closely monitored as he undergoes treatment in the hospital.

The Holy See Press Office reported that the episodes were caused by a significant accumulation of mucus in the lungs, leading to bronchospasm. To address this, two bronchoscopies were performed to remove large secretions. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed later in the afternoon, and the Pope remained alert, oriented, and cooperative throughout the process. However, the prognosis remains guarded, with further respiratory crises potentially possible.

Despite his health challenges, the Pope’s test results showed no signs of new infections, and his condition is considered to be a consequence of his pre-existing pneumonia. The Pope’s clinical status remains complex, and doctors continue to closely monitor his recovery.

Earlier in the day, Pope Francis made a heartfelt plea for peace, especially for regions affected by conflict. In an Angelus address, the Pope called for prayers for Ukraine, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, Kivu, Palestine, and Israel, emphasizing the absurdity of war. He expressed deep gratitude for the prayers and support of the faithful during his illness and urged continued prayers for peace in the world.

Reflecting on his illness, Pope Francis expressed that it had deepened his trust in God and allowed him to share in the suffering of others. He also thanked the medical professionals caring for him, acknowledging the grace he has found even in his condition.
