Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India]: The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand from today has sparked political reactions from various quarters. The state is now the first in India to bring the UCC into effect.
Congress Criticism
Congress MP Kumari Selja expressed her opposition to the move, accusing the BJP and the BJP-led Uttarakhand government of attempting to divide people, with the UCC playing a central role in this effort. Speaking to media, she said, “People’s rights should not be snatched away. Everyone is equal, but our constitution also talks about protecting the rights of everyone. This government tries to divide people and this is also a part of that.”
Shiv Sena’s Support
In contrast, Shiv Sena (UBT), an ally in the INDIA bloc, has voiced support for the UCC. Spokesperson Anand Dubey stated, “Uniform Civil Code is a good thing. It provides uniform rights to all citizens. This does not create any discrimination among religions… The law in the country should run in accordance with the Constitution drafted by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.” He also emphasized that the UCC should not be viewed as being against any community and welcomed the move.
Uttarakhand Leads with UCC Implementation
Uttarakhand is set to become the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code today. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami explained that the UCC aims to bring uniformity to all laws concerning personal civil matters, such as marriage, divorce, succession, and inheritance, eliminating discrimination based on caste, religion, or gender. He added that all necessary preparations, including the approval of rules and training of officials, have been completed.
Chief Minister Dhami’s Statement
On X (formerly Twitter), CM Dhami expressed, “The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in the state from January 27, 2025, making Uttarakhand the first state in independent India where this law will come into effect. UCC will bring uniformity in society and ensure equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens.”
Key Features of the UCC
The Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Act, 2024 will streamline personal laws related to testamentary succession, wills, and codicils. The act applies to all residents of Uttarakhand, including those living outside the state, with exceptions for Scheduled Tribes and certain protected communities. The UCC aims to standardize laws, bringing clarity and fairness to legal matters related to family and inheritance.
The UCC’s implementation marks a significant step in India’s legal and political landscape, and it is expected to ignite continued debate on its societal and legal implications.
