Assam Police Seizes 11,100 Bottles Of Codeine-Based Syrup Worth Rs 2 Crore; CM Highlights Anti-Narcotics Efforts

Assam Police seized 11,100 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrup worth Rs 2 crore during an anti-narcotics operation near Damcherra in the Cachar district on Friday.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the efforts of Cachar Police for their swift action, revealing that the seizure was based on credible intelligence.

“Based on credible intelligence, an anti-narcotics operation was conducted by @CacharPolice near Damcherra where a vehicle transporting illegal substances was intercepted. Upon thorough search, 11,100 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrup valued at Rs 2 crore were recovered. Commendable efforts by @assampolice,” Sarma wrote on X.

Anti-Drug Operations in Assam

The recent seizure reflects Assam’s sustained efforts against narcotics under CM Sarma’s leadership. In a media interaction on Wednesday, Sarma highlighted the state’s progress in curbing drug trafficking, with seizures worth Rs 682.44 crore in 2024 alone.

  • Heroin: 183 kg
  • Ganja: 22,776 kg
  • Opium: 114 kg
  • Psychotropic tablets: 33.07 lakh
  • Morphine: 14 kg
  • Codeine-based syrup bottles: 2.30 lakh

From 2021 to 2024, Assam police arrested 5,059 individuals and registered 3,287 cases related to drug trafficking.

Crackdown on Child Marriage

In addition to anti-narcotics efforts, Assam has been actively targeting child marriage. From 2021 to 2024, police arrested 5,978 individuals and filed charge sheets in 5,577 cases.

  • Arrests in 2023: 4,927
  • Arrests in 2024: 641

Decline in Crime Rates

The Chief Minister also highlighted a significant reduction in overall crime in the state:

  • Crime cases in 2021: 1,33,239
  • Crime cases in 2024: 49,966
  • Crime rate per lakh population in 2021: 379
  • Crime rate per lakh population in 2024: 139.2

Crimes against women and Scheduled Castes (SC)/Scheduled Tribes (ST) have also seen a substantial decline, signaling improved law enforcement and governance.
