Police Respond To Shooting Near Harvard University; Suspect On Bicycle Still At Large

Cambridge, Massachusetts: Police on Friday responded to reports of gunfire near Harvard University after a man allegedly opened fire while riding a bicycle. The suspect remains at large as authorities continue their search in the area.

According to an initial emergency alert issued by Harvard University, the suspect was seen riding toward Garden Street after firing shots at another person on Sherman Street, near Danehy Park.

“Cambridge Police are reporting that an unidentified male on a bicycle just shot at another person on Sherman Street. The suspect is on a bicycle heading toward Garden Street. Please avoid the area and shelter in place,”
the university said in a statement on its emergency website.

In response, the university issued a temporary shelter-in-place order, advising students and staff to remain indoors. The alert was lifted after police secured the area.

The Cambridge Police Department later confirmed that ballistic evidence had been recovered from the scene but clarified that no victims have been identified so far.

“Cambridge Police are currently on scene of a shots fired incident that took place on Sherman St. in the vicinity of Danehy Park. Ballistic evidence has been recovered. There are no known victims or ongoing public safety risk at this time,”
the department said in an official statement.

Harvard University urged the community to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity.

“Please continue to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the HUPD at 617-495-1212,”
the university’s emergency alert website stated.

Garden Street, where the suspect was last seen heading, runs from North Cambridge toward the Radcliffe Quadrangle and Harvard Square, both of which are busy university zones.

Witnesses said that nearly 20 minutes after the first alert, some students and residents were still outside in the Radcliffe Quad area, though police had cleared the location by 11:40 a.m. Staff members in residential houses instructed students to remain indoors until further notice.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and track the suspect.
